The West Indies have broken a 23-year hoodoo following their draw in the second and final Test match against Sri Lanka, which saw them claim the two-match series 1-0. Before this series, the West Indies had not won a Test series against Sri Lanka in 23 years, with their last series victory over the subcontinental side dating back to 2003.
Sri Lanka have been a major bogey team for the West Indies, making the lifting of their maiden Sobers-Tissera Trophy a historic milestone. The series victory was also significant as it secured much-needed points and marked their first series win in the current ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, lifting immense pressure off the team.
Although the second Test ended in a stalemate, the West Indies showcased immense improvement with the bat. Amir Jangoo smashed a monumental 233 in the first Test, while captain Roston Chase added a brilliant 194. Justin Greaves earned Player of the Series honours, notably hitting a defensive masterpiece of 180 in the second Test while Shai Hope made 112.
This victory also comes amid heavy criticism of head coach Daren Sammy and captain Roston Chase, who finally broke their Test series duck as a leadership duo.
“I’ve been trying for the last series and stuff but to go and actually lead from the front, it feels great,” Roston Chase said after the series win.
“We had four hundreds [in the series]. I mean, we’ve been scoring hundreds in the past games but these are big hundreds and not only that, we turn them into big totals as well. Not just one guy getting a hundred and we probably just getting over 250, but for two guys to get hundreds in two innings, that says a lot…I think this is a stepping stone for us going forward.”
