The local bridge community is in high spirits as the 10-member national team celebrates six podium finishes, including three wins, at the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Bridge Championships earlier this week.
The 36th annual tournament was held at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, Dominica. Saint Lucia took home titles in the Open Pairs, OECS Pairs and Open Teams events.
Over three days of intense competition, Saint Lucia dominated the pairs tournaments, winning four out of six trophies and taking the top two spots in both pairs events.
In the most prestigious event, the OECS Pairs, Jackie Theodore and Ian Hippolyte finished first, ahead of John Lewis and Naomi Patrick-Smith. A team from Martinique placed third.
In the Open Pairs competition, John Lewis and Naomi Patrick-Smith finished ahead of Irvin Smith and Dexter Theodore. Once again, a pair from Martinique took third place.
Jackie Theodore, Ian Hippolyte, Nannette Reyes and Monique Devaux-Lovell won the Open Teams division over Martinique and hosts Dominica. Martinique won the OECS Teams, with Saint Lucia’s Irvin Smith, Victor Theodore, Naomi Patrick-Smith and John Lewis in second.
Dominica claimed first and third place in the Swiss Teams event, the only competition in which Saint Lucia did not place.
The Saint Lucia Bridge Association, which took a 10-member team to the tournament, thanked sponsors such as the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Republic Bank and the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association.
