Lil Yachty Flames Chance The Rapper

Atlanta rapper Lil Yachty wants the MTV Video Music Awards to really put some respect on his name. The hip-hop star has come forward to rip apart the annual ceremony for not acknowledging his artistry especially after having collaborated with major artists like Drake and DaBaby over the past few months.

Lil Yachty Disses MTV VMAs

Heading into Saturday, Yachty went to his Instagram Story to keep things 100 on the awards show.

“I don’t f*ck with that. A n*gga work, I be doing some sh*t, putting my all into some sh*t and people trying to sh*t on that and try to discredit some of the things I’ve done or discredit some of the sh*t that I’ve done did, like try to downplay it or try to make it seem as if that sh*t ain’t nothing or whatever the case may be – I don’t f*ck with that. Nah, that sh*t is wack bro. I don’t know. That’s all I got to say. That sh*t is wack. VMAs is dumb wack for that sh*t. The nominations. All that sh*t is corny. N*ggas don’t be giving me no respect. I don’t f*ck with that. But whatever.” -Lil Yachty’s Instagram Story

High-Key Details

In addition to Yachty feeling a certain type of way, Maybach Music Group’s Wale spoke out about getting snubbed by the MTV VMAs. Ralph Folarin went to his Twitter page – after retweeting an article about the nominees – and shared his disappointment.

“I shouldn’t be this disappointed. I know I shouldn’t but here we are” -Wale’s Twitter

Both Wale and Lil Yachty released multiple visuals throughout the year but ultimately didn’t secure nominations in the iconic MTV VMAs awards category.

Wait, There’s More

This year’s awards show features DaBaby and Megan Thee Stallion landing three nominations each including a face-off for Video of the Year – which could have easily included Lil Yachty’s “Oprah’s Bank Account” featuring Drake and DaBaby. Rap rookie Roddy Ricch earned a Best New Artist nod while rap star Nicki Minaj has a couple of nods.

Best Hip Hop is another exciting category featuring nothing but Billboard Hot 100 hits from Megan, Eminem ft. Juice WRLD, as well as Travis Scott’s “Highest in the Room.” Future and Drake also earned several nominations for “Life Is Good,” including Best Collaboration. Nominees for Best R&B include Alicia Keys, Chloe x Halle, Lizzo, The Weeknd, Khalid, and H.E.R.‘s protest anthem “I Can’t Breathe,” which also earned a nod for Video of the Year. Before You Go

In late June 2020, buzz developed about the MTV VMAs ceremony going down in-person at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. However, the current coronavirus epidemic could force little to no fans in attendance.

An MTV rep confirmed to Variety last month that the network was working with city officials to hold the VMAs at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on August 30, and said further details would be forthcoming. On Monday morning, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the show will take place with “limited or no audience.” Just a few hours later, the network made the announcement official: “This year’s screen breaking spectacle will bring together music fans worldwide and pay homage to the strength, spirit and incredible resilience of NYC and its beloved residents,” it reads. “Spanning all five boroughs — Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island, Queens and Manhattan — music’s biggest night will feature epic performances from various iconic locations.” (Variety)
