Alexx Ekubo was laid to rest on Thursday in his hometown of Aziukwubwo Ujori village, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, as family, friends, colleagues, and admirers gathered to bid a final farewell to the beloved Nollywood actor.
The actor, who died on May 11 at the age of 40 following a prolonged battle with Stage 4 kidney cancer, was honoured in a series of emotional ceremonies that drew mourners from across Nigeria’s entertainment, business, and political circles.
The burial activities began with a Service of Songs held on June 10 at The Monarch Event Center in Lekki, Lagos. The solemn gathering saw colleagues, friends, and dignitaries dressed in white as they celebrated the life and legacy of the late screen star.
On Wednesday, Ekubo’s remains were received at his family compound in Abia State amid a convoy of vehicles. Relatives, friends, and community members gathered for a heartfelt wake, sharing memories of the actor and reflecting on the impact he made during his lifetime.
In keeping with local tradition, younger members of the family escorted his remains into the compound while carrying a portrait of the late actor, a symbolic gesture that underscored the community’s deep respect for him.
The final funeral rites took place on Thursday, bringing together a host of Nollywood stars and prominent personalities who came to pay their last respects. Among those in attendance were actors Nancy Isime, Stan Nze, IK Ogbonna, Bimbo Ademoye, Deyemi Okanlawon, Omoni Oboli, and comedian Ayo Makun (AY).
Also present were Caleb Ajagba, Chief of Staff to the Abia State Governor; renowned businessman Obi Cubana; and Matthew Ekwuribe, the state’s Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy.
One of the most touching tributes came from actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli, who confirmed that Ekubo had been laid to rest and announced a special initiative to support his family.
In a message shared on Instagram, Oboli revealed that proceeds from her upcoming film, The First Lady, scheduled for release on her YouTube channel, would be donated to the late actor’s family.
“We’ve laid our bestie Alex to rest to the glory of God. Thank you Jesus!” she wrote.
“In his memory and to honour his legacy, I am releasing our movie The First Lady on Omoni Oboli TV on YouTube. The proceeds will go to the family, so please help us share widely.”
She concluded her tribute with an emotional farewell: “Alexx Ekubo! You came, you saw, you conquered! You are forever in our hearts. Love you forever.”
